Collin Raye Concert Review – Lake Jackson, Texas

On one of the few sunny Saturday’s since New Year’s Day, I decided to take a road trip to Lake Jackson, TX.  Not really a tourist hot spot, however this weekend one of country music’s top hit makers was performing at The Clarion at Brazosport College.  Collin Raye has a track record of five certified platinum albums, 24 top ten hits, and 15 number one hits.  Saturday night’s performance was billed as an acoustic performance with two acoustic guitars (Collin being one) and piano accompaniment.  Raye is known for his rocking, upbeat and energetic performances, so an acoustic performance seems a little “out of character”.   So it would seem.

The Clarion is a 600 seat concert hall built to accommodate acoustical performances.  The “acoustics” proved to be quite impressive on Saturday evening.  Raye emerged on a darkened stage to begin the evening with one of his top ten singles from 1999 “Anyone Else”.  He continued on with well known hits that included “Little Rock”, “I Can Still Feel You”, and “Little Red Rodeo”.

Raye is very personable and quickly established a rapport with his audience.  He mentioned that he likes performing in the smaller venues because it is more intimate and he can make eye contact with almost everyone in the audience.  Raye stressed that the large stadium shows are exciting due to the sheer number in the crowds, but the smaller venues made him feel like he was performing with friends in their living rooms.  Throughout the evening he made everyone feel right at home.

Raye’s voice continues to be as strong and as powerful today as when he first emerged on the country music scene in 1991.  With the release of his latest CD “Never Going Back”, Raye continues to produce quality and versatility in his music.  With only his guitar and piano accompaniment, Raye performed two selections from the CD, “The Only Jesus” and the latest single release “She’s With Me”.  “She’s With Me” is a touching  tribute written by Raye for his granddaughter who has a regressive neurological condition.

Mid-way through the evening, Raye changed the tempo and the direction of the show with a selection of classics that expanded several decades and genres of music.  Raye began with the timeless Simon and Garfunkel classic “Bridge Over Troubled Water”.  He introduced the song by stating that “it was one of those you are afraid to do because you don’t want to mess it up”.  No worries.  Raye did a beautiful rendition of this classic and was rewarded with applause and cheers from the crowd.  He followed with Kris Kistofferson’s “Sunday Morning Coming Down”.

Raye next faced the challenge of “Rockin’ It Up” with “Do It Again” by Steely Dan with two acoustic guitars and one grand piano.  Rockin’ it up they did with the amazing guitar accompaniment of Chris Raspante and outstanding piano accompaniment of Melanie Shore.  The electronic embellishment and the beat of a drum were never missed.  The crowd was engaged and amazed and erupted with applause of appreciation several times throughout the song.

Raye ended the set of timeless classics with a rendition of Hank Williams Sr’s “Ramblin’ Man” and Elton John’s “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”.

Raye then returned to the hits that gave him his multi-platinum status.  He rocked out again with “That’s My Story” which he continues to perform “true” to the style of the original recording and sings it in the original key even though he is “not as young as he use to be”.  Raye explained to the audience that Conway Twitty gave him sage advice at one time “to never change the key of your songs because your audience will appreciate you more”.  Good advice.

Raye concluded the evening with his first number one hit “Love, Me” which the audience sang along to throughout.  He returned for an encore with “In This Life”.

An acoustic performance for Collin Raye was definitely NOT out of character.   The audience enjoyed an evening of true (not enhanced) music performed by three exceptionally talented artists.  The artists were rewarded with a standing ovation, applause and cheers.

Pamela Danzy’s Single “Cryin’ Days” Ranked #25 Of The Top 200 Most Requested Songs

Country artist Pamela Danzy’s single “Cryin’ Days” ranks #25 out of the Top 200 most requested songs on TOSSM Radio.  Danzy’s first single released from her debut CD “Let Me Be Me” continues to receive increased radio airplay and fan requests.  “Cryin’ Days” quickly rose to the top TEN requested songs on TOSSM Radio and remained there for 15 solid weeks since its release in September 2009.

Danzy’s second single “Love’s Been Rough On Me” debuted on TOSSM in the Top 10.  Danzy recorded and released her debut CD on her own Indie Label JMD Records, LLC.  “Let Me Be Me” is a blend of soulful, swampy, country blues twist of songs, unique to her influences and true to the roots she has earned.

Danzy’s roots grew in the swamps of Louisiana, through the hills of Tennessee and now have been planted in Austin, Texas.  Pamela has blended her soulful roots with a passionate style inspired by artists like Etta James, Delbert McClinton, and Lee Roy Parnell.

After graduating high school, Pamela moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, where she was a regular on the Louisiana Hayride and played at the local honky-tonks all across the State.  Pamela left Shreveport, to pursue a career path on the national roads that took her right to Nashville, Tennessee, the music capitol of the world.

Upon arriving in Nashville, Pamela went to work and showcased for labels such as Capital, Epic and Sony Records for producers Jimmy Bowen, Tom Collins and Val Garay to get the studio schooling she needed and craved.  Pamela spent her time in Nashville soaking in the sounds and traditions of country music’s legends.  Danzy developed her own style of country music.

Danzy’s debut CD is an excellent showcase for her unique sound and versatility.  “Let Me Be Me” has received rave reviews from the press.

“.. Danzy offers confident vocals and a passionate delivery….. but the best song on the album is “Save Me.” This slow melodic gem shows the true caliber of Danzy’s vocal talents.….. “Let Me Be Me” proves that Pamela Danzy is a country artist ready to take on the world.” - Country Chart (Sep 20, 2009)

“She creates chills in songs like “Let Me Be Me”, “Save Me” and “Love’s Been Rough On Me”…..”Cryin’ Days” is uptempo and has a beautiful slide guitar accompaniment….It closes with the touching ‘When the Day is Done”. With “Let Me Be Me”, Pamela has made a beautiful picture.”-  Bootsy Lester, Rootstime (Jun 02, 2008)

Danzy is currently working on completing and recording a new single to be released early 2010.  Danzy is co-writing with top Nashville talent.  The single is scheduled to be recorded in Nashville with release by late March.  Her new single will demonstrate her talent not only as an artist but also as a songwriter.

Country Tonite Concert Review

Country Tonite ShowThis past week, I traveled to Branson, MO for a short getaway.  While there I attended the Country Tonite show at the Oakridge Boys Theatre.

The show is a jammed packed two hours with a brief intermission after the first hour.  The first hour will get your blood flowing and your hands clapping with featured singers, high energy dancers, and a little comedy thrown in by host Bob Nichols.

The second hour of the show features guest entertainers from some of country music’s finest.  The Country Tonite band pulls it all together with top-notch talented musicians that include Gene Mulvaney on steel guitar, Nathan Agdeppa on fiddle, Casey Smith on drums, Mike McAdoo on guitar, Marty Wilhite on bass guitar (as well as the Music Director), and Randy Luna on keyboard.

32990508-c9ee31706b1436e1fd06e77622b66f88_4ac2e303-scaledCountry Tonite includes today’s hottest songs, songs from the 70′s and 80′s, as well as a few new twists to some of country music’s standards.  The featured vocalists are Kenya Wilhite, Kim Barber, David Griffin, and Jason Froeschle.  All four are extremely talented artists with unique sounds of their own.  While their voices blend together in perfect harmony throughout the show, they each showcased their individual talents in solo spots as well.

IMG_0263The most memorable solo performances for me included Kenya Wilhite’s rendition of Dolly Parton’s Jolene.  Kenya’s voice lends a soulful and emotional sound to this classic.  Kim Barber’s voice was strong with haunting emotion with her performance of Johnny and June.  David Griffin has a strong, raspy voice with a little attitude.  He grabs your attention with Be My Baby Tonight.  Jason Froeschle rounds out the soloist with an upbeat and powerful rendition of the hit from the Zac Brown Band Chicken Fried

IMG_0267The Country Tonight Band was featured in a performance of The Devil Went Down to Georgia.  Charlie Daniel would have been impressed with this talented group and a standout performance from fiddler Jason Agdeppa.

32990913The Country Tonite show is enhanced with great choreography and talented dancers that include Bristol Sosa, Jenn Turner, Jill Perry Fitzpatrick, Tim Ehrenberg, Todd Coker and Stephen Feemster.  They add energy and personality to the show.  They also added a bit of surprise with some unexpected and skillful clogging.

The second half performance featured multi-platinum recording artist Collin Raye.  Raye has five platinum albums and fifteen #1 hits to his credit.  He performed some of his standards including I Can Still Feel You, That’s My Story, Little Red Rodeo, and his signature hit Love, Me

Raye also performed this reviewer’s favorite Little Rock accompanied on keyboard by Melanie Shore. Melanie is extremely talented and also serves as Raye’s Music Director.

IMG_0270Raye performed his current single She’s With Me from his new CD Never Going Back previously reviewed in this blog.  She’s With Me is a loving tribute to his granddaughter Haley who has a regressive neurological condition and is physically challenged.  Raye spoke openly about Haley’s condition and performed the song with the care and emotion only a loving grandfather could.

Raye gave a strong performance and was personable as always.  Having followed Raye’s career from the beginning, I will say without a doubt that his voice only gets stronger and more powerful each and every year.  His ability to reach out and connect with the audience continues to enhance each and every performance.  He makes himself at home with the crowd with humor and sincerity.

Country Tonite is definitely a must see on your next trip to Branson, MO.   The show flows well and is definitely entertaining.  You will want to sing along and laugh a little.  You will walk away with a smile on your face.  I was sad to hear that the show will be closing at the end of this season in December.  If you plan on making a trip to Branson do it quickly.  You don’t want to miss the chance to see it!

Spotlight Artist: Stephen Cochran

Photobucket

Cochran was born in Pikeville, Kentucky and raised in the heart of Nashville’s songwriting and recording community. Cochran’s Dad, known as Steve Cochran, was a struggling songwriter and artist back in the ’70s. Country legends such as Bobby Bare and the late Del Reeves are just a few of the fellow artists that drifted in and out of the Cochran home.

“That was my school, coming home and watching Dad practice and play and write,” he says. “With Dad doing his music hustle, I was raised in the business and I learned the ins and outs. I love music, and that’s what he instilled in me.”

In addition to his ongoing tour, Cochran continues his ongoing work on behalf of his fellow veterans (Cochran is a decorated Marine veteran of campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan). One example is his work with the Coalition to Salute Heroes, an organization that provides tools and therapy to returning veterans. Cochran has played countless benefit shows that have help raise funds for severely wounded veterans. Through his efforts, Cochran has helped transform lives and raise funds through his music.

“The way I was raised was to be thankful to this country for being able to do our dream, and my dream is music,” Cochran says. “These soldiers and their families have sacrificed so much for this great country, and it’s an honor and a privelege to do whatever I can whenever I can to salute them and to help them.”

While on tour, Cochran performs with high energy and a dedication to his audience and fans. Cochran believes that we all have a calling on this earth and his is music. He is true to his roots and his country soul.

CD Review: Pamela Danzy “Let Me Be Me” (Debut CD)

Let Me Be mePamela Danzy has emerged on the country music scene with her debut CD Let Me Be MeLet Me Be Me is a mixture of country blues, laid back soul and soft rock.

The title song Let Me Be Me is a bluesy ballad that speaks to being true to yourself.  Danzy’s voice is soulful and powerful.  The song speaks of the imperfection of being human and accepting one as you are in the matter of love.

Save Me and Loves Been Rough On Me are soulful ballads about love and heartache.  One Less Monkey, Cryin Days, and Remedy blend country rock with a little jazz.

Pearl written by Kim McLean and Lisa Brokop is an emotional ballad about an abused child that finds the strength inside of herself to overcome her childhood and pursue her dreams.  The song paints a picture of a young girl who reaches into her soul and fights to triumph over hardship.

Danzy has created a CD that grabs your attention and forces you to listen to each and every song.  Her voice is powerful and emotional.  Danzy’s debut CD is an excellent showcase for Danzy’s talent, unique sound and versatility.
